In the past few years, India's disease profile has shifted
drastically from contagious to non-transferable diseases (NCD’s). The high occurrence of NCD’s in spite of
their preventability is highly concerning. They are accountable for about 53%
of the inflicting diseases and 60% deaths in India. They could prove fatal if
not properly managed as they prevail for long-terms of the patient’s lifetime.
The fatality of NCD’s is also one of the major reasons for
the increasing shift towards a preventive, rather than a curative, healthcare
mindset. In preventive healthcare measures, non-contagious diseases —such as
hypertension, obesity, cardiac disease, and diseases caused due to smoking or
alcoholism—are invariably tackled first. NCDs can be prevented more easily than
communicable diseases like malaria, tuberculosis, pneumonia or dengue. Yet,
NCDs are accountable for seven out of every 10 deaths across the world.
In one of its reports, WHO stated that appropriate
preventive measures undertaken by these countries have drastically reduced the
incidence of coronary heart disease and other chronic lifestyle diseases in
western countries. With the lifestyle improvisation involving routine
vaccinations and checkups, many maladies have been successfully eliminated.
Therefore, WHO emphasizes that preventive healthcare measures must get their
precedence in the practice of medicine. The estimate says that almost 70% of
these diseases are avoidable with timely assessment and intervention.
NCDs also tend to have a better chance of getting
successfully managed if detected early, and the chances of detecting them early
are more with a preventive mindset when regular health check-ups are done. Even
the government has realized the importance of preventive healthcare, although
there is a lot more that needs to be done. In the Union Budget of 2011-12, the
government of India introduced tax benefits under Section 80D of the Income-tax
Act on preventive health check-ups of up to Rs 5,000. It was intended to get
the public into a routine of regular health check-ups. Health care benefits
providers like the reputed ‘Cognate Health Services Pvt. Ltd is directing it’s efforts and resources to make
quality health care more affordable and accessible.
As people are becoming more aware, the focus is shifting
from a physician-centric approach to a customer-centric one. Although the shift
has already begun, it will gather the needed momentum as the diagnostics
service provider becomes the integrated healthcare solution provider. Cognate Health Services Pvt. Ltd. (CHS)
